Last week was Hour of Code nationwide. This movement is meant to celebrate computer science and learn how it applies to all subject areas. Many teachers celebrated here at LASD, but one in particular celebrated Hour of Code in a very unique way. Ms. Dawn Kelley took her Kindergarten class on an amazing adventure programming a robot. Yes, a robot!!! She went all out and created her very own robot costume, appropriately named Kelley Code 2015. The students had to program Kelley Code 2015 to walk over to them and jump in the air. Students learned vocabulary like sequence, programmer, and code. After they programmed Kelley Code 2015, they took turns programming each other. They loved being able to make each other move about the room and jump in the air. This experience was unique and made our students use problem solving skills. Great job Ms. Kelley and Kindergarten!
Ms. September Beach's Gourmet Foods class has decided to endeavor in the world of food blogging. She had her students create a blog using Blogger. From there, the students had creative range over how to post pictures, the recipe, ingredients, and anything else they felt could contribute to their blog. For this particular blog, students were making pasta. They posted pictures of themselves making the pasta from scratch as well as the sauce. Great job Ms. Beach and students! Looks delicious!
Ms. Nancy Smith and her 3rd graders decided to try some blended learning this week. I was there to assist and witness this fantastic transition. Her students were proud to show me how to access Compass Learning, I showed them how to use GO Math Interactive Student Edition, and Ms. Smith worked with small groups on math concepts. These students were fantastic. I did not see one student off task for more than a moment in between the transitions. Students utilized every inch of spare space in the room to get comfortable while working in pairs in the independent group. I am proud to call these 3rd graders our Little Bolts! Great job Ms. Smith!
This week I observed three teachers working together to co-teach math using the Library at Alloway Creek. These teachers took over the library to create their very own Library Commons. The students are rotating around to different teachers and different activities throughout the math period. Why you ask? These teachers are truly trying to meet each individual student's needs. Myfanie Baker, Heather Fowler, and Ashlie Rittle are working together to create their very own, unique math period. They are also easing into this transition with Ms. Fowler adding her students to the mix after holiday break so they do not overwhelm the students. I am VERY excited to see this level of creativity while utilizing the Chromebooks at Alloway. Great job ladies! The students will really benefit from this level of customization!
